Welcome to Harrietville and surrounds…

Harrietville is a village nestled at the top of the Ovens Valley situated at the foot of Mt Hotham and Mt Feathertop (Victoria’s 2nd highest peak), on the Great Alpine Road 22kms from Bright. Regarded as one of the states prettiest holiday areas, Harrietville is an ideal all-season holiday destination.

In winter its proximity to the Hotham (30km), Falls Creek (75km) ski resorts and Mt Buffalo (30km) make it an accessible and affordable base for lovers of all kinds of snow sports.

During the ‘green’ seasons, Harrietville is a perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors. Hikers, cyclists, 4WD enthusiasts and motorbike riders are drawn to the challenging mountain roads and trails in and around the town. This scenic village by the Ovens River is also a fantastic place to simply relax and shrug off the stresses of life.

A bit of history…

In 1861, Harrietville evolved. Originally a pastoral property named after Harriet Tisdale, one of the few European woman living in the area at the time. In 1879, Harrietville was proclaimed a town. Gold was first found in Harrietville in 1852, first by alluvial mining then reef mining and finally dredging until the mid 1950s.

Today the picturesque mountain village is built upon tourism and the snow industry. Its beauty an amazing walks along with a relaxing atmosphere makes Harrietville the perfect place to visit, offering a unique and memorable holiday experience year round. Eating and drinking nooks in Harrietville and surrounds range from cosy cafés and country pubs to boutique breweries and distillers.  Eat and drink at the top of the mountains or by the rivers in the valleys, the scenery is your choice!

Swimming and fishing

Harrietville has plenty of swimming and fishing holes. From fresh mountain streams to the historic deep water Tronoh dredge hole. Cool off, paddle, swim or float, the choose is yours. The Tronoh Dredge hole is equipped with BBQ, jetty, pontoon and rope swing! The Mountain Fresh Trout Farm offers a family fun day with a good chance to catch your own dinner.

Harrietville is the perfect base for your adventure and is a gateway into the Alpine National Park. With awe-inspiring views and challenging climbs, four wheel driving and dirt bike riding in our region is must do for any enthusiast.

Steeped in history, Harrietville is a subalpine village filled with memories and stories of yesteryear. Its beginnings as a gold mining settlement is characterised throughout the town and further instilled by mining installations dotted throughout the valley floor.

From berries to lavender, or jams to trout caught in our fresh mountain spring water you will be able to load up your basket and take home a little piece of Harrietville and surrounds.

Enjoy a relaxed pedal with the family on the shared trail from Pioneer Park to the Trout Farm or go beyond Harrietville into off road rail trail network that winds through Victoria’s high country valleys offering speculator views and picnic spots along the way. If you’re more of a thrill seeker, head into Bright to experience the iconic Mystic bike park, a world class downhill and x-country facility. If you’re an endurance rider, the steep climbs and winding valley roads offer challenging but rewarding adventures.

Harrietville is the ideal base for walkers of all abilities. You can take on all types of track and trails, from gentle ambles along the crystal clear streams, to longer treks through rugged Alpine terrain

Get closer to nature at this spectacular ‘island in the sky’, home to plants found nowhere else on Earth. Sheer cliffs, granite tors, waterfalls and big views make Mount Buffalo a must-see alpine retreat. Hike through stunted Snow Gum forests, toboggan in Cresta Valley, camp at Lake Catani – and admire the view from the Horn. There’s something to do in every season.

The Alpine National Park is an adventure-lover’s dream. Hike Victoria’s highest mountain ranges, explore wildflower draped landscapes  or head out on world-class mountain bike trails. Run wild rapids on white-water rafting trips, four-wheel drive the secluded reaches of the park or cross-country ski through tangled snow gum forests.
